Customs officer shoots civilian ‘friend’ dead while trying to extort European returnees ---------- A Customs officer has killed a civilian, Godwin Onoja, while allegedly trying to extort N5,000 bribe from travellers coming from Europe on the Sagamu end of the Lagos-Ore-Benin Expressway. . One of the passengers, Mr Oliver Joseph, who lives in France, said he and the other passengers in the bus arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday evening. . He stated, “The driver stopped and asked them what the matter was. The driver told them that the bus belonged to Iyare Motors and it was pointless to ask him to stop. Immediately the driver parked, one of the officers came and asked who owned the luggage. The driver told him that the luggage belonged to the passengers. The customs officer asked us where we were coming from and we told him that we were coming from overseas and that we were here on a visit. . “He said he had interest in the luggage and needed to check them one by one. We told him that they had been checked at the airport. He replied that he must carry out his job and ordered us to alight from the bus. One of them then called the driver and asked him to give them N5,000 for them to allow us to go. We heard the driver saying that he did not have the money and that we did not have anything illegal. The driver then told us that the Customs officers demanded N5,000 from us. . “We eventually agreed that our luggage be searched and one of us insisted that he would record it so that they won’t place contraband in our bags. So, the guy brought out his iPhone 6, but one of the officers demanded to have the phone but the passenger refused, saying that the price of the phone could pay his salary. . “The officer just took some steps back, cocked his gun and fired. Immediately he fired, a man fell down. Before we knew it, one of the two Customs officers in green sweater ran into the bush, leaving the others. We were 10 passengers in the bus and when we took a headcount, we were complete. There was blood all over the victim’s face, so we could not recognise him. ----------- #storycrib247 #asithappened

Nigerian Ambassador To Ethiopia Warns Travellers Against Carrying Over $3000. The Nigerian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Bankole Adeoye, says Nigerians staying in Ethiopia over 14 hours, or transiting to other destinations, need to be wary of carrying monies in excess of $3000, or its equivalent in other currencies. Adeoye said this is as a result of a longstanding economic policy by the Ethiopian government. According to him, the policy is being re-enforced, causing Nigerian travellers to lose hundreds of thousands in forex while passing through the country. He further stated that so far, over 25 Nigerians have had monies and valuables confiscated because of the policy. Adeoye, who was speaking on the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, however, said the Nigerian government is working to help recover confiscated monies but wants Nigerians to be aware of the risk of carrying forex in excess. He urged Nigerians carrying such monies, to declare them, at the point of entry. “The job of the embassy, the task before us is to make sure that awareness is created, is greater, is intense and most Nigerians are aware when they come that they need to be cleared on arrival. #storycrib247 #asithappened #Nigerians #ethiopia
We Urge INEC To Deliver Free, Fair Elections – Taraba Govt. The Taraba State Government has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) to deliver free, fair and credible elections in the country. The government made the appeal in a statement issued on Sunday, by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Bala Abu. While lamenting over the postponement of the polls Abu, however, stated that even if the elections had taken place on Saturday, many voters in the state would not have been able to exercise their franchise because of the late arrival of materials and other logistics problems. He, therefore, called on INEC to use the next week to make better preparations. We urge INEC to take advantage of the postponement to do a better job of conducting a free and fair election. We wish to remind the commission that Taraba is a very vast state with terrains that are difficult to access. These facts must be considered in the timing of the allocation and distribution of materials for the election, Abu stated. #storycrib247 #asithappened #taraba #INEC
Economic Implication Of Election Postponement, "Horrendous" - Muda Yusuf. Nigerians who were surprised when the country’s presidential election was postponed Saturday might suffer a second shock when they learn the cost, some economists and business leaders say. The cost to the economy of the postponement of the election is horrendous, said Muda Yusuf, General Director of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry who advanced an estimate of $1.5 billion. The economy was on partial shutdown the day before, and total shut down on Saturday for the elections” that did not take place, he explained. The streets of Lagos were still empty early Sunday as the sprawling economic capital of 20 million people recovered from the disappointment and anger provoked by a last minute, one-week delay blamed on logistical issues. The Independent Electoral Commission announced the delay just hours before polls to elect the head of Africa’s most populous nation and members of parliament were to open. The INEC cited problems in the distribution of ballot papers and results sheets, as well as sabotage, after three fires at its offices in two weeks. The leading candidates, incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and challenger Abubakar Atiku, both called for calm, but a population of 190 million people facing unemployment and extreme poverty took a real financial hit from the decision. #storycrib247 #asithappened #apc #pdp #atiku #buhari #inec

INEC Rules Out Political Influence In Election Postponement. . The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has ruled out political influence in the postponement of the Presidential and National Assembly elections earlier scheduled to hold on February 16 and March 2, 2019. Prof. Yakubu said this while addressing stakeholders at the National Election Collation Centre located at the International Conference Centre, Abuja. The meeting followed INEC’s announcement in the early hours of Saturday postponing the general elections by a week, less than five hours to the start of the polls. Giving reasons for the postponement, Prof. Yakubu said, “The decision has nothing to do with security, political influence or inadequate resources” He attributed the postponement to mainly logistical challenges faced in deploying human and material resources for the conduct of the elections. The INEC chairman also mentioned as drawback what he described as an attempt to sabotage the commission’s effort, with the fire incidents which ravaged its offices in different parts of the country, the worst being the case in Awka, Anambra State, where over four thousand card readers were destroyed in a fire that gutted the facilities where they were stored. #storycrib247 #asithappened #apc #pdp #atiku #buhari #inec

The coalition made the allegation in a statement made available to journalists by its spokesman, Imo Ugochinyere. . Ugochinyere said, “The President is planning to use the excuse of inability to hold election today (Saturday ) as a reason for the imminent suspension. . “Feigning ignorance of the real reasons behind the shift, the President in his earlier statement today did not have just a word for the shameful and despicable actions of security forces and the Central Bank’s staff who, in obedience to Presidency’s directives, deliberately sabotaged the distribution of sensitive materials in selected states. . “We are aware that his hurried return to Abuja today from his home state, Katsina, is to sack the INEC boss. But this should be resisted by all well-meaning Nigerians and the international community. . “The sin of the INEC chairman is that he refused to conduct staggered elections that will allow the President and his men to manipulate the process. . “The Presidency had mounted pressure on the Commission to conduct election today in states where there were no issues and postpone only the states with materials distribution issues. . “The INEC chairman insisted on conducting the election at the same time, hence warranting the postponement of the entire election. . “We hereby warn President Buhari that the position of the INEC chairman is independent, hence, he cannot be removed from office via suspension. #storycrib247 #asithappened #apc #pdp #atiku #buhari #inec

The Senate President and Director General of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) Presidential Campaign Council, Bukola Saraki, has described the last-minute postponement of Presidential and National Assembly elections as disappointing. In a statement, Senator Saraki said the decision by INEC has caused a great inconvenience to many Nigerians who were poised to vote for their choice as president and federal legislators. He deplored the fact that issues of logistics and related matters were blamed for postponement after all the preparations by the commission, the security services and other agencies of government. Waiting till just a few hours to the commencement of voting before announcing the postponement of elections is extremely sad. Nobody can quantify the difficulty that this will bring to people at every level, he stated. While empathizing with youth corps members already deployed for the elections, as well as other Nigerians whose businesses were put on hold because of the no movement order, Senator Saraki said, “I want to appeal to Nigerians not to be deterred, discouraged or disappointed. ‘INEC Must Explain’, TMG Condemns Postponement Of General Elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) has a lot of explaining to do about why it postponed Nigeria’s general elections, the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG ) said on Saturday. Chairperson of the TMG, Dr Abiola Akiode-Afolabi, said this about nine hours after the nation’s electoral body postponed the elections by a week. The last-minute decision by INEC has been widely condemned and the TMG, which together with other observer groups deployed more than 4,000 across the country is “totally disappointed”. Decrying the limited explanation provided by the electoral umpire, Dr Akiode-Afolabi, called for an audit of the process. “We have a right to know, INEC must explain the reason for this postponement of elections,” she said, calling for an audit of the process. BREAKING: PDP Condemns Postponement Of Elections, Asks INEC Chairman To Resign. The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ), Prince Uche Secondus has said that the ‘shoddy’ arrangements for this election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, is a deliberate predetermined agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari to cling on to power. Prince Secondus said that the postponement which is part of a grand design by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to thwart the will of Nigerians at all cost, clearly exposes INEC as a failure and calls on the Chairman of the Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu to resign immediately. The PDP leader warned that the party will not accept anything short of a well organized electoral process devoid of manipulation, harassment and intimidation of voters and the opposition particularly members of the PDP. According to the party stalwart, postponing the elections is a plot by the ruling party to cling to power. Having failed in all their nefarious options to enable them to cling on to power, the APC and the INEC came up with the idea of shifting election an action that is dangerous to our democracy and unacceptable. The National Chairman said that the APC in connivance with the INEC have been trying all options including but not limited to burning down INEC offices in some states and destroying of electoral materials to create artificial problems upon which to stand for their dubious act. #storycrib247 #asithappened #apc #pdp #atiku #buhari #inec
Why We Postponed General Elections – INEC. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC ) on Saturday explained why it postponed the general elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, addressed reporters at the press centre of the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s Capital. The Presidential and National Assembly elections were earlier scheduled to hold on February 16, while that of Governorship and State House of Assembly were expected to hold on March 2. Professor Yakubu, however, told reporters that the polls would not go on as planned due to some challenges encountered by the commission. According to him, the decision to postpone the polls followed a careful review of the implementation of the logistics and operational plans put in place for the exercise. The INEC boss reiterated the commitment of the electoral body to conducting a free, fair, and credible exercise. He explained that the postponement of the elections would afford them the opportunity to address the issues raised, although the decision was a tough one to make. #storycrib247 #asithappened #INEC #apc #pdp #atiku #buhari

Niger Delta militants vow to stop oil flows, cripple economy Militants under the aegis of the Niger Delta Avengers on Thursday threatened to halt crude oil flow from the Niger Delta and cripple the economy if President Muhammadu Buhari is re-elected. The group decried what it described as the “continuous criminal exploitation and exploration of our natural resources that engender the underdevelopment of the Niger Delta.” In 2016, the nation saw a resurgence of militant attacks on oil and gas facilities in the Niger Delta, causing oil production to plummet to near 30-year lows of around 1.6 million barrels per day in August that year. The militants were behind a wave of oil production disruption that helped push the country into its first recession in 25 years. A ceasefire reached in August 2016 helped pull the country out of recession in the second quarter of 2017. #storycrib247 #asithappened #apc #pdp #atiku #buhari #nigerdelta #militants
